Developed by Cairn Technology working hand in hand with many of the UK's leading teaching hospitals, the Hospital Fast Response Spill Station is now a common site in hospital wards, labs and theaters. When cleaning and disinfecting surgical instruments such as endoscopes, a washer/disinfector is used in combination with water and a chemical disinfectant solution.

A range of chemicals are available and these include glutaraldehyde, peracetic acid, chlorine dioxide and ortho-phthalaldehyde. These solutions are held in tanks within the washer/disinfector, tanks typically have up to 15 litres capacity and systems often have 2 tanks. Spills and accidental releases of disinfectant may occur when: handling the disinfectant before filling the storage tanks filling the storage tanks leaks occur in the washer/disinfector the washer disinfector malfunctions, e.g., tanks overflow or during discharge to drain

The nature of these incidents vary from: small routine spills, typically less than 1 litre significant accidental releases, typically up to 5 litres major incidents, up to 30 litres Other Applications. Washer/disinfectors in Endoscopy Units, Operating Departments, Day Surgery and Out Patients. Formalin in Operating Departments, Mortuaries and Pathology Laboratories.
